Workshop on National Accounts

Cairo, Egypt, 19 December 21 December, 2006

Information Note

The provision of national accounts data according to well-established and harmonized ‎standards represents an important pre-requisite for appropriate policy analysis and ‎intervention. Unfortunately, countries of the ESCWA region still follow different ‎compilation rules and recommendations in national accounts estimation, making the ‎aggregation of data for the whole area a somewhat difficult task. For example, whilst a ‎majority of countries in the region prepare national accounts estimates following 1993 SNA ‎standards, some countries are still anchored to the old 1968 SNA system. Furthermore, in ‎the most advanced cases the degree of implementation of 1993 SNA varies in many respects.

Moreover, in the last few years considerable progress has been made with the update of the ‎‎1993 SNA (1993 SNA, Rev. 1) in a worldwide consultative process coordinated by the UN, ‎notably through the Inter secretariat Working Group on National Accounts and the Advisory ‎Expert Group on National Accounts. This process is to be completed by the end of 2008. ‎However, when completed the process will certainly represent a further challenge for many ‎National Statistical Institutes in this area and a 'risk factor' for a greater convergence of ‎national practices in national accounts compilation.‎

The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UN-ESCWA) ‎organizes a Workshop on National Accounts, to be held from 19 to 21 December 2006 in ‎Cairo, Egypt. The event will take place in the Ramses Hilton Hotel, 1115 Corniche El Nile, Cairo, Egypt; Telephone: +202 2 394 6927; Fax: +202 2 394 6938.

The main objective of the Workshop is to develop a regional forum for exchange of views ‎and practices, consultation, and analysis of current and perspectives issues relating to 1993 ‎SNA implementation and update in Western Asia. The Workshop will focus on both ‎theoretical and practical key issues. A particular emphasis will be given on future ‎perspectives related to 1993 SNA updating and revision.

The following items will be discussed:

‎1.‎ Selected issues in the updating of 1993 SNA;‎
‎2.‎ State of implementation of 1993 SNA in member countries of the UN-ESCWA ‎region;‎
‎3.‎ Quarterly National Accounts;
‎4.‎ Changes to the annual questionnaire of National Accounts; and‎
‎5.‎ Creation of a national and regional data-base for National Accounts.
